Disaster Preparedness

United Way's Role in Disaster Preparedness:

  • The powerful "Community Impact" that United Way can achieve during a crisis is apparent as we work in close relation with many private and public institutions.
  • Although United Way is NOT an immediate disaster response relief agency, it does work extensively through it's member agencies and volunteer partners in time of emergency.
  • United Way understands that local, state and federal emergency operation plans are in place to direct a coordinated response to emergencies and disasters.  Our role is to support these emergency plans and not duplicate the work of other agencies.

United Way's Focus:

Long Term Recovery

United Way understands that, after outside agencies and resources have left the scene of the disaster, it is the "local community" who will take primary responsibility for the long-term recovery efforts.  It will be local service organizations that are at the core of such efforts, in cooperation with the government, non-government, faith-based and for profit community organizations.
